Adaminaby
The town of Adaminaby, home of "The Largest Trout in the World", was relocated to accommodate the introduction of the Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Scheme.
Many of the original buildings were transported by truck to their new location. Rainbow Pines Tourist Park at Old Adaminaby retains on its grounds the original schoolhouse (now the office and shop) and church built circa 1896. Adaminaby is an ideal base from which to explore the nearby Kosciuszko National Park and indulge in the great variety of tourism activities of the high mountains of NSW in all seasons.
The annual Trout Festival fishing competition is held in November. A race meeting is held each February.
For filmgoers and horse racing enthusiasts, it is interesting to note that the Old Adaminaby Race Track (located on the road to Rosedale on the Cooma side of the town) was used in the film Phar Lap.
The Snowy Mountains
The Snowy Mountains (part of the Great Dividing Range) contains Australia's highest mountain - 2228 metre Mount Kosciuszko, all of the NSW snowfields (with some of the best ski resorts in the country), Kosciuszko National Park, and the Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric scheme.
All year round, the Snowy Mountains provides a rich variety of activities for the whole family.

Mid June to early September brings the snow season with world class snowfields providing your winter entertainment with snow skiing, snow boarding and general snow playing.
Lake Eucumbene
Lake Eucumbene is the largest man-made lake in the southern hemisphere and is part of the Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric scheme. Completed in May 1958, the lake has a shore line of approximately 150 miles or 240 km and stores about nine times the water in Sydney Harbour.
The Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Scheme
The Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric scheme took 25 years to build and includes 7 power stations (2 underground), 16 dams and over 140 km of tunnels.
One of the largest hydro-electric projects in the world, the Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Scheme employed over 100,000 workers from more than 30 nations, who braved the harsh climate and difficult terrain to create a system which today produces clean, renewable energy and provides much needed irrigation to the Murray and Murrumbidgee River valleys.
Mount Kosciuszko
The Snowy Mountains boasts Australia's highest mountain peak. Soaring to a height of 2,228 metres above sea level, Mount Kosciuszko was first climbed in March 1840 by Polish explorer and scientist Sir Paul Edmund de Strzelecki. He named the peak after the Polish patriot and democratic leader Tadeusz Kosciuszko.
Kosciuszko National Park
The Kosciuszko National Park was proclaimed a national park in 1967. The 690,000 hectare park is renowned for its massive peaks (including Mt. Kosciuszko), vast wilderness areas and stunning landscape which ranges from glacial lakes to alpine meadows. Its alpine and sub-alpine areas contain rare plant species unique to the park and are also home to the rare mountain pygmy possum and corroboree frog.
Selwyn Snowfields
You have the choice of alpine skiing, snowboarding, tobogganing/snowtubing, cross country skiing, or just playing in the snow. Selwyn Snowfields has plenty of wide, open, groomed terrain covering more than 45 hectares, with runs to suit all standards.
Selwyn Snowfields motto is "friendly, family, fun" and the emphasis is on family with activities and ski lessons to appeal to all.
The natural snow cover of Mount Selwyn is enhanced by a state of the art snow-making system that covers up to 80% of the mountain - the largest percentage of any ski area in Australia.
Family Snow Skiing packages are available.
Yarrangobilly Caves
Yarrangobilly offers spectacular formations in the limestone caves that are open for public inspection and regular tours are offered by the Park Rangers. There is also a naturally heated thermal pool accessed from the Caves area. The water in the pool is constantly refreshed and maintains a temperature of 27 degrees C all year round.
Snowy River Winery
Berridale is home to the Snowy River Winery. Located on the banks of the Snowy River, this is Australia's coldest climate vineyard.
The Snowy River
The Snowy River region has been immortalised through the words of the Banjo Paterson poem "The Man From Snowy River".
"He hails from Snowy River, up by Kosciuszko's side, Where the hills are twice as steep and twice as rough, Where a horse's hoofs strike firelight from the flint stones every stride, The man that holds his own is good enough. And the Snowy River riders on the mountains make their home, Where the river runs those giant hills between; I have seen full many horsemen since I first commenced to roam, But nowhere yet such horsemen have I seen."
A high country holiday gives you the rare opportunity to experience for yourself the rugged setting of this famous Australian poem. Rainbow Pines Tourist Park is the ideal location for your high country experience.
